Folly Beach Seniors March Update

The Folly Beach Seniors will meet March 7 at 11 am in the Community Center. All 55 and older are invited. The main dish will be corned beef and cabbage prepared by Pat Holsclaw. Our speakers will be Mary Catoe and Amy Ray who will give us an update on their efforts to bring additional services to our residents.

Additionally, John McFarland will give an update on our Legacy video club project that is free to any Folly Beach senior. The Seniors have a legacy program. It will be explained how easy it is to have one made. You will be the star of the show! It is generally filmed in your home and is your recollection of a life well-lived. Your children and grandchildren are the target audience. We welcome all of our seniors to participate. We wish you a happy and lucky Saint Patrick’s day.

Folly Beach Seniors Honor Long-Time Members

No one really knows just when the Folly Beach Seniors Club was founded here on the island. If you ask the old-timers, they just smile and say, “I don’t know, but it’s been a long time”. The first Sandspur edition of February 1978 mentions an upcoming meeting on February 2 at 10:45 am, and meetings have paused only for hurricanes, snowstorms, and Covid. We still get together every month for meetings, interesting speakers, lively conversation, and potluck lunches. More than 46 years! Some things don’t change here on the Edge, do they?

But there was a passage of sorts that took place at the February 1st meeting this year. Jack Carter and Laverne James, two of the original members of the Club, stepped down as co-Chairmen of the group. Jack is 96 now and Laverne turned 90 on his last birthday. Together they have led the monthly meetings for the duration. Pauline Ray, our long-time secretary, has agreed to stay on for a while, though, and they were all honored and thanked for their many years of dedicated service to the elders of our Folly Beach community. Together, we have benefited from more than 50 years of growing and supporting our island.

A big Thank You! goes out to them from all of us and we look forward to their grace, guidance, and wisdom for many years to come. (See photo to right)
