June’s Yard of the Month recipients, Gary and Louise McDermit selected 410 West Hudson three years ago for their retirement home. Lured by Folly’s charm and closeness to Charleston they began with a blank palette for gardening.
A slender bed of grass bound by a stone wall borders the road with sweetgrass waving at passersby. Oaks and palmettos are plentiful with sago, windmill and fan palms underneath. Variegated ginger lilies, yaupon hollies and purple loropetulum are scattered below. The left bed is accented with a blue looking ball. Farther back the arbor under which they were married is hosting asiatic jasmine. The right bed sports a wind mobile and Louise’s favorite tree – a blue bottle tree.
Garnet and pink cordylines in blue pots flank their entry with Leland cypress behind. A fountain given by a friend highlights this area with juniper topiaries standing beside. Philodendrums are abundant below the oaks and palmettos.
Louise has enjoyed seeing the progress of what they have created. They both love to walk and decompress in the ocean breezes of Folly. Our congrats to the McDermits.
The Garden Club will meet for a noon luncheon on May 24th at Loggerheads prior to their summer break.
Happy Father’s day,
